About the Show
This year the Conservatory production plays in the Hurst Theatre bringing the joy and magic of Mary Poppins to a whole new generation of young audiences in this fully-produced one-act version of the Tony-Award(™)-winning Broadway musical. In addition to rehearsal and performances, you receive daily training in dance, voice and acting with industry professionals, taking your skills to the next level. Participation by audition only.
From MTIshows.com: The jack-of-all trades, Bert, introduces us to England in 1910 and the troubled Banks family. Young Jane and Michael have sent many a nanny packing before Mary Poppins arrives on their doorstep. Using a combination of magic and common sense, she must teach the family members how to value each other again. Mary Poppins takes the children on many magical and memorable adventures, but Jane and Michael aren't the only ones upon whom she has a profound effect. Even grown-ups can learn a lesson or two from the nanny who advises that "Anything can happen if you let it." Disney and Cameron Mackintosh's Mary Poppins JR. is an enchanting mixture of irresistible story, unforgettable songs and breathtaking dance numbers.
Directed by Graham Northrup, MFA
Music Direction by Terry Lee
Conservatory is advanced-level training and participation is by audition only.
There are 2 rounds of auditions: 1. Conservatory Acceptance Auditions and 2. Casting/Placement auditions.
1. Acceptance Auditions
All candidates must register using the link below, and submit a resume, headshot and audition video(s) - Youtube link, Dropbox or other online format (preferred) or mail in a DVD.
What to Prepare for Acceptance Auditions
- 16-32 bars from a song from a contemporary or classic musical. Song must be memorized.
- A comic or light dramatic monologue under one-minute in length.
- A reading of a monologue or any other reading in a British dialect (Standard/RP or Cockney). Students accepted to the Conservatory will receive dialect training.
DEADLINE: Acceptance auditions are accepted February 15 through April 15. Candidates are encouraged to submit earlier than later, as the program may fill prior to the deadline. Due to voice changes, evolving candidate pool, show selection, limited space, and other factors, prior Summer Conservatory students must re-apply and audition each year. If selected for the program, you will receive an invitation to audition for a role no later than April 20, 2018
2. Casting/Placement Auditions
Once accepted into the Conservatory, students must sign up for a time slot to complete a casting/placement audition June 30 (TIME TBD) (link will be provided upon acceptance). Individual auditions will be in the early afternoon; callbacks, if needed, will be in the later afternoon. If the student will be arriving to Aspen after this date, make individual arrangements with the Director of Education Graham Northrup - firstname.lastname@example.org; 970.300.4299
What to Prepare for Casting/Placement Auditions
Please prepare 16-32 bars from a song from a contemporary musical. Song must be memorized. Please provide sheet music for our accompanist (preferred), or an instrumental CD/MP3 track. No a capella. May be the same song as the acceptance audition, but students are asked to choose a song that emphasizes character-acting skills.
About one month prior to Casting/Placement auditions, sides (excerpts from the script) will be posted here for advance perusal. They need not be memorized. Students will be asked to read from the script and use their bodies and voices to create characters, and interact in meaningful ways with other characters/actors.
Students will be given a dance routine during auditions.
A note on casting: The Creative Team is diligent in our efforts to cast students in roles that will both help them experience growth, as well as ensure the success of the production as a whole. Upon admission to the Summer Conservatory, students acknowledge that they will accept any role.
